top of one's head
Макушка головы. Off the top of one's head — без предварительной подготовки, спонтанно. Выражение вошло в употребление в конце 1930-х гг. и пришло из мира радио, а позже из телевизионных программ. Режиссёр передачи обычно похлопывал себя по макушке, показывая тем, кто находился в студии, что программа опережает расписание, имеет лишнее эфирное время и что им нужно быстро найти дополнительный материал, чтобы заполнить это время.

I don't know exactly how old he is. Off the top of my head, I would say about forty. — Я точно не знаю, сколько ему лет. Не долго думая, я бы дала ему лет сорок.
